Fingerless mitts and plant motifs, in my mind, are made for each other. The name Vinea is Latin and means vine. When I think about harvesting plant material for dyeing experiments, food, or herbal teas, I think of spring and fall, when you need that extra layer but don’t want your fingers to be encumbered by a mitten. The idea for a trailing plant on the lateral part of the mitt seemed like a perfect representation of how we should be relating with the plant world in as many ways as possible—from the sheep that eat the plants, the dye material used to color the wool, the images on our fashion, to our hands harvesting plants for food, medicine, and in our fiber arts practice.
